DR. JEKYL or MISTER HYDE?!

ANOTHER HALLOWE'EN illustration - this one accepted - started out to be Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy his puppet (by the way, Edgar is actress Candice Bergen's father) - I know that most people under 25 are saying, who the hell are these people? to them I say, get some pop culture under your belt! I like the fact that the characters now seem more Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde - this piece was created by divine intervention - and some bad drawing.

SISTERS ARE FOREVER ...

HALLOWE'EN illustration - of course rejected, so therefore it must have some creative merit. Love the movie 'What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?' starring the incomparable Bette Davis and Joan Crawford (this film was created in the era where actors could actually act, movies had plots, and audiences didn't spend their movie time on their phones) - ah, the past ... if you want to know what this illustration means, watch the movie - great film! And yes, Bette actually serves Joan some rat ...

Monday

SALT LAKE CHILI AFFAIR

OLDER PIECE but I really liked the logo of the two 'dia de los muertos' skeletal guys fighting over the red-hot pepper ... my friend and co-designer Trent Jameson, at then design studio Axiom created the balance of the campaign - great work for a great cause...

NORDSTROM LATINA

IDEA for my contribution to Nordstrom's Hispanic Awareness month ... twice before I had pieces accepted for this campaign, in one case the Director of Marketing actually bought 'los Adictas'. I believe that this was an idea for some accompanying print materials for Nordstrom ... did'nt get used, but I really like the tenor of the piece. Sketch was made using markers, color copy transfers, and photoshop.

ANOTHER 'MARIE ANTOINETTE' ICON ...

LET THEM EAT CAKE - icon developed for the small styleguide presented to Sony (by DOT) in hopes of attaining the styleguide work for the movie 'MARIE ANTOINETTE' directed by one of my personal favorites SOPHIA COPPOLA ... movie was not licensed for merchandise, so what is left is some great commercial design.

HAREM GIRL FOR METROPOLITAN ...

HAREM GIRL was an illustration done for an invitation for local swank eatery METROPOLITAN ... as Diana Vreeland (former editor/fashion expert) quipped, "pink is the navy blue of India" ... illustration is acrylic paint, ink, and white-out on board ... client was very happy with the work, I will try to remember to post the entire invitation ...

CONCEPT FOR AN EDITORIAL

CONCEPT envisioned for an editorial spread for a magazine in Los Angeles ... if memory serves me right, the client had us go in a completely different mode, but I like the immediacy of this preliminary sketch - sketch was done in pencil, white-out, ink, and color copy transfers. I believe the theme for the article/illustration was about the money guys and the pressure on the artist to conceive, accomplish, and win the accolades as well ...

Wednesday

DECORATED MESSENGER BAG

BAG DECORATED FOR CONTRIBUTION to a charity. I was asked to donate a decorated messenger bag to raise funds for a charitible cause ... I was one of a great selection of local artists invited to contribute. Each artist was given identical bags to decorate - I have no idea what my theme was, probably my usual chaotic style. Great fun for a great cause ...

Monday

WELCOME - to Henry and Bryn's house ....

Henry Smith (designer extraordinaire and volleyball champion), commissioned a 'welcome to my house' painting for his new house .... given his and Bryn's European heritance, I opted for a quasi-Medieval German theme (the banner at the top translated to English reads 'Enter at your own risk' ... the type on Henry (the alchemist's shirt) reads 'we promise not to bite'. Piece is acrylic paint, ink, white-out on 1/8 masonite. Great piece for a great friend and his new family .... and especially for COOPER the min-schnauser - great guy! (dog) ...

Thursday

CONCOURS de ELEGANCE CAR SHOW POSTER

CAR SHOW POSTER - remember when the Concours d' Elegance show was located on the U of U Campus? Always a great show of some amazing vintage cars ... this poster was created for just one of those shows. Photography and computer graphics - not my usual style but I think it turned out very handsomely ... graphics were also applied to banners, t-shirts, commemorative brochures as well!

PROPOSED ART FOR COCA COLA BRAND

COKE ART ... project done through Dot design firm ... a sample of art using a collage effect for a Coca Cola project Dot worked on ... didn't fly and they went with the more predictable graphic solutions - fun to do though!

A PROJECT with BLAINE OLSEN WHITE GURR ...

CONVENTION TREASURE MAP and DIRECTIONS. Worked with Jeff Olsen at BOWG on this one ... they needed a Pirate treasure map for a convention function. Great to make, loved working with BOWG on this and other projects too! Map was hand drawn and distressed using and old iron and Rit dyed water.

THE OTHER TWO OLYMPIC COVERS-CITY WEEKLY

THE OTHER TWO OLYMPIC COVERS for CITY WEEKLY - over a period of three weeks, CW has me create a new cover for the period that the Winter Olympics were in SLC ... a bit cynical, but interesting messages nonetheless. Used found images and found type and some illlustration of my own ... received one of 10 Copper Ingots at the AIGA 100 show that year. Loved working with City Weekly, they were so great to pretty much let me do 'my thing' (whatever that is ...).

FRITZ and ANDRE

AN original painted sketch for marketing/design firm FRITZ und ANDRE ... (love to use the German 'und'). Produced to announce the birth of a new creative firm, hence the aliens circling the newly congealed star. Acrylic, collage, white-out on found cardboard.

GLUTTONY from the 7 DEADLY SINS

GLUTTONY - featuring BILLY BOLOGNA - who better to represent gluttony, obviously overfed, and definitely arrogant about it ... his tie features the logo of General Foods, in all his sinfulness, he still bears a golden halo around his head signifying his ascension to king of overindulgence. Big piece, 4 x 4 feet - ink, gold paint, acrylic on masonite.

SKECHERS t-shirt Icon

'LOVE, DEVOTION, SKECHERS' - proposed icon for placement on a t-shirt, this one for Skechers ... like the 'ghostly' quality of the image.

T-SHIRT ICON for KITSON

'GOD SAVE the QUEEN' - one of several English-based icons for placement on a t-shirt. Designed for the trendy Kitson boutique on Melrose avenue in Los Angeles ... this was a Dot project - great client - always fun to design for. When I worked on this one, I channeled the amazing aesthetic of punk-innovator/designer Vivienne Westwood, who just turned 70!

MOVING ANNOUNCEMENT FOR A DESIGN FIRM

'CHANGE of a DRESS' - when Dot decided to move to their present location, I got to illustrate/design the moving announcement. Debbie Roque did the back (the stuff you have to actually be able to read). I created the primary art using transfers, pencil, ink, masking tape, collage. The dresses came from some older high fashion magazines from the late 1980's ... if memory serves me right, the dress on the upper right is either Norma Kamali or Ozbek Rifat (?) ...

SNOWBOARD DESIGNS PROPOSED FOR K2

SNOWBOARDS K2, PROPOSED ART .... 2 snowboard designs proposed for K2, older pieces but the art on these were great fun to create, some of the best stuff is on skateboards and snowboards, I've even seen some very artistic skis ...

ICON FOR GOONIES STYLEGUIDE

'ONE-EYED WILLIE' - icon for Goonie Styleguide - older piece, but I love tattoos - one of many submitted for inclusion in the completed styleguide which consisted of the usual elements. I don't believe this is the finished piece submitted but a later version nonetheless.

BROCHURE FOR A ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY HOUSE

'GOOD THINGS THAT LAST' - printed brochure which I illustrated for design firm 8-Fish, their client produced homes created from recycled materials and were environmentally friendly and energy efficient. Great design by a really great group of people at 8-Fish.

ICON for EBAY styleguide - 'IT' ...

'IT' IS RAPTURE ... icon for a proposed selection of styleguide elements for Ebay's campaign 'IT is..' This particular icon shows the transcendence achieved when using an item bought at Ebay ... in this case a vacuum cleaner which has miraculously transported our lovely homemaker to a place of inner wonderfulness ... note her glazed eyes.

PAINTING - 'PLASIR de L'AMOUR

ACRYLIC PAINTING - 'Plasir d 'Amour' ... again, big painting ... depicting the carnal and ethereal aspects of love, and of course the standard 'love is blind', but with pitfalls nonetheless. Used acrylic paint, black housepaint, and gold metallic paint on masonite. This piece was bought, as are most of my pieces ... I really don't own much of my own work, I think it's wonderful when someone wants to hang your art in their home or office ... what a compliment and honor - even if it's just a printed piece!

ICON for Marie Antoinette

ICON for a styleguide - 'Marie Antoinette' ... like this icon, never published or bought, but pretty much says it all ... KING LOUIS THE 16TH.

LOS MUERTOS.

'DIA de los MUERTOS' - fairly small canvas depicting the march of the dead on the Mexican 'Day of the Dead' .... acrylic and collage on canvas. I love my inheritance of Mexican/Catholic imagery. Viva la Vida !

LUST from the Seven Sins

LUST as personified by 50's puppet/tv icon HOWDY DOODY - one of seven sins I painted for a show years ago ( Barbie as Envy is still my favorite) ... Howdy is painted a lusty blue against a backdrop of 'peep-show' images, some men and some women. Big piece, 4 x 4 feet, acrylic, marker, housepaint, on masonite.

PROPOSED ICON for 'BEAVER' STYLEGUIDE.

'BEAVER CLEAVER - ANIMAL ACTIVIST' - submitted this icon (one of many) with project we were working on at Dot .... a styleguide for NBC/Universal for 50's tv program 'Leave it To Beaver' - I don't think my love of animal protection was shared by them - well, at least not in this case - rejected, but funny nonetheless!

MAURENT de FAIM!

'LIFE'S A BANQUET and MOST POOR SUCKERS ARE STARVING '(en Francais) - large painted piece, around 5 x 5 feet, acrylic paint, housepaint, ink, marker, white-out, watercolor, on masonite with 'floating' frame. One of my favorite films is "Auntie Mame" with 30's filmstar Rosalind Russell; one of Mame's maxim's is 'life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving!' So, I gave our strange character in the painting a feast to remember, and a wonderful glass of pink abysinthe as well. I hope my French translation is correct, if not, too late, it's a finished piece. Love the fact that when translated to French - the phrase 'starving to death' becomes 'death of hunger', you really have to love the French. Great piece, great fun to make, would love to do it again! Merci beaucoup ...

DRESSED TO THRILL - SKECHERS

DRESSED TO THRILL - ahh, the benefits of being and ex-Catholic ... love the imagery I grew up with, especially the images of the poor martyred saints. Now pretty much worshipping trees, I gave myself permission to use my those religious icons to create an urban icon, albeit tongue-in-cheek, t-shirt icon for Skechers. Don't know if they ever used. Created using ironed transfers, several layers. I drew the panthers, set the type, the frame is copyfree from some clip-art book I found at a local thrift store. Amen ...

PRODUCT TAGS JUNIOR MARVEL

JUNIOR MARVEL TAGS - although created a few years ago, I think they are still pretty cool - it was so much fun drawing the Marvel characters and actually creating usable tags. Created using color copier, ink, markers, white-out too.

TALK SOUP - E! ENTERTAINMENT

ICON created as part of a collection of icons and style elements for E! Entertainment's 'Talk Soup' program. Created using color copier and markers.

IMMORTAL MARIE ANTOINETTE

IMMORTAL MARIE - we submitted a small styleguide of elements inspired by the Sony Studios, Sophia Coppola's 2006 film MARIE ANTOINETTE ... although our designs received positive reception, the client decided not to license the film for product/merchandise. This particular design was created using photoshop manipulated image and b/w copier, and always spraymount!

LOVE DEVOTION SKECHERS

LOVE DEVOTION SKECHERS - older design from a couple of years ago - I think it was a final comp (among others) that we sent to Skechers for approval ... I like it though. Design was created using color copied transfer that was scanned in photoshop, other elements were added as well.

Tuesday

HELLO !

'HELLO' - acrylic paint, ink, whiteout, housepaint on 1/8" masonite board .... painted as a welcoming piece for the new home of my rep Lisa of Firefly. Originally painted in black and white for design firm DOT for their foyer ... a great greeting for any foyer!

Monday

GANESH (in candyland)

GANESH in Candyland - Lisa my rep wants me to create a series of pieces for sale that are amusing representations of Hindi Gods/Goddesses .... my first foray into this challenge is 'Ganesh in Candyland' ... Ganesh removes life obstacles from the lives of the devoted and pretty much makes life sweeter. The piece measures about 2 feet wide by a little over 2 feet long ... painted in masonite with a cutout 'floating' frame, medium is acrylic paint, ink, collage, and whiteout. Really fun to paint, I hope I have captured the wonderful essence of Ganesh. Lisa is a master yoga instructor but a great artist's rep as well!
